How to Add New Users to your WordPress Website? And Assign Roles

In this post, I will show you how you can add new users to your WordPress website.

Now, this is how it works.

You have a website, and you want to add new users and give specific permissions to them. Then they won’t be able to make any other changes.

For Example

The user with a rule of posting new articles can only modify the posts. He won’t be able to change the theme, install or delete the plugins, or anything else.

You can also give the user complete access then he will be able to control the entire site.

How to Add a New User in WordPress?

To add a new user, go to the WordPress dashboard. From the left section, choose Users

Then, click on Add New.

In the “Add New User” section, add the user information.

Assign a Role to a User

Heads-Up: It’s a good practice, to keep your site’s backup all the time. So that you can revert any changes, after messing up your site.

To assign a role to a new user, select a role from the drop-down section. You can give any authority to a new user.

Once done, click on Save Changes.

You can see a notification of the new user created.

The user with an “admin” pass will have complete authority over your website. He can add or delete plugins, themes, posts, pages. In short, he can do everything on your website,

How the user Log in to your website?

After you create a website, the next step is to share the login credentials with the user.

Share the login credentials, and ask them to go to your website login page.

The URL for the website login page would be something like yourdomain/wp-login.

Here, the user will enter his username and password.

That way, he will access the website.

How to change the user role?

If you want to change the role, go to the Users section, and click Edit for any user.

Again, from the drop-down section, you can select a new user role. And, once done, click on save changes.

Now, your user will have new authority over your website. You can again change the role whenever you want.

Let’s take a look at different user roles, and see their authority level.

Admin Role

The user with the admin role has all the access to the website.

Admin can edit, remove, and publish anything in your website, from posts, plugins, pages, themes to tables, and more.

All in all, the Admin is like a new owner of your website. You might want to give this access to a user, to solve errors on your website.

By the way, I have super helpful post to resolve the 5XX error on your website.

But, be-careful as admin is the higher most rank and it’s gives the complete authority to a user.

Editor Role

To select this role, click on Edit for the user. And, from the drop-down menu, select ”Editor”.

It is one of the most used roles for WordPress users. The editor can only access the posts and pages.

The editor doesn’t have access to any other settings except the posts and pages.

Author Role

For the Author role, click on Edit for the user. And, from the drop-down menu, select ”Author”.

The author can write, edit, and publish the posts. The post will have an author-name same as the user.

So, each post in WordPress has a user linked to it i.e, the one who published it.

The author’s role will let the user create their posts and edit them. But they won’t be able to edit any other user’s posts.

And, the user with the author role will not have access to pages.

Contributor Role

The contributor will have access to only the posts. He will not be able to edit or modify any other posts.

And, when the contributor writes his posts, he won’t be able to publish them. Instead, he will submit the post for review.

So, the contributor can write his posts, but he has no permission to publish them.

Top 4 User Roles

Let’s see the four user roles in the table form. I will list all the permissions with their roles and try to make it super clear and concise.

So, by now you must have a good idea about user roles, and their permissions.
